Dr Stephen Tarr BDS (Rand)
Owner and principal dentist
GDC number: 56900
British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry FULL MEMBER
As practice owner and principal, I believe in improving my patients’ health and wellbeing through conservative and cosmetic dental techniques that have a positive impact on their overall appearance and self-confidence.
After graduating at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, I have completed hundreds of hours of post-graduate training in cosmetic, orthodontic, dental implantology and general dental procedures. I continually strive to remain up to date with new procedures, materials and equipment and I am an Invisalign-certified dental practitioner.Read more
I have been in private practice for more than 30 years and my philosophy is to compassionately impact the quality of life of my patients through my personal commitment to excellence, patient satisfaction and comfort. I believe my patients deserve the best possible care and treatment. Our patients’ time is important and we can confidently say we never run late.
I have been restoring implants for over 20 years and I am continually gaining more knowledge in this area, with special interest in function and aesthetics. I have had training under leading world experts in implants, cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics for both children and adults. Since 2002 I have completed extensive training in dento-facial orthopedics and early intervention orthodontics. I am trained in the use of all Damon braces, which focus on the patient’s whole face now and how it will appear in years to come.
Together with my loyal and highly skilled team we have served families in Marlborough and Wiltshire as well as many patients from further afield. We serve all the surrounding boarding schools and most of the families have remained regular patients, including the young adults who first came to me for early intervention orthodontics while still at prep school! I have developed a strong relationship of trust in these communities and appreciate the steady stream of new patients that are regularly referred to us.
It is so satisfying and heart warming to walk through all the stages of life with the many patients I treated as children, who are now having their own families. I am able to care for their children as well - what a privilege!
Integrity, honesty and trust are the hallmarks of all that we do. That trust can never be compromised – this is what we strive for. I have imparted this philosophy to my team and expect this level of integrity from the specialists and expert dentists that serve our patients.
Staff turnover is minimal – we are a very happy family. We love it when our patients notice and share this, saying they feel welcomed, honored and respected. We have grown through word of mouth and this is the highest reward and honour for the team at Marlborough Dental Studio. We love getting to know our patients. Everyone brings something special into our day – it’s not all about dentistry.
It is also a privilege to be able to support our local community events, organisations and charities including Marlborough College Concert Series, Dentaid, Alzheimer's Society, Breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Christian missionary organisations.
My wife Wendy has supported me in the growth of Marlborough Dental Studio with her tireless input, encouragement and wisdom. For relaxation, I love the ocean, beaches and sunshine. I grew up near the beach in South Africa so this passion will always remain with me. Wendy and I also enjoy having great fun with our two sons and extended family.

I have worked with Dr Stephen Tarr since 2001 and share his passion for aesthetic dentistry and its ability to transform a patient's appearance and confidence.
After graduating in 1996 from the University of Bristol, and through numerous postgraduate courses, I have established an interest in cosmetic, endodontic, and implant-retained restorative treatment. I am an Invisalign-certified dental practitioner.Read more
I am a highly disciplined and motivated dental practitioner having gained substantial patient-focused skills in private practice. Technical skill gained from a restorative technician background and attendance of advanced aesthetic programmes allows me the confidence to achieve the desired smile for the most discerning of clients. The extensive use of the Cerec system gives me the clinical freedom to design the precise restoration desired during a single appointment.
The Marlborough Dental Studio is a family practice that provides the highest standards of care in all the dental disciplines normally associated with a Harley Street address. We really do care and always try to make our patients comfortable and welcome. The satisfaction of completing a treatment and holding the mirror to let the patient see their new smile still thrills and that is why I love dentistry.
I am a keen mountain biker and also enjoy motor biking. I am fortunate to live on the edge of Salisbury plain so have lovely walks for myself and my dog right on my door step. I have been married to Jill since 1990 and we have two boys, Josh and Matthew.
Dr Graham Gardner
Specialist Orthodontist, BDS MDent (Orth)
GDC number: 62113
After qualifying as a general dentist in 1984 from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, I worked for five years in general dentistry whilst continuing postgraduate studies. This was followed by a three-year post as Specialist Registrar in Orthodontics at the University of Witwatersrand Dental Hospital, after which I attained my Master of Dentistry in Orthodontics. Since then I have been involved exclusively in specialist orthodontic practice, first in South Africa and now in the UK.
Being a leader in the field of Invisalign, I lecture for Align Technology Inc. and run Invisalign accreditation workshops and advanced courses for dentists, specialist orthodontists and consultants in the UK and Europe. I also host Invisalign Study Groups in the UK and Ireland. I was one of the few orthodontists
In recognition for my considerable experience using Invisalign, Align Technology Inc. has awarded me the most prestigious and highest award achievable, which is the Diamond 500 Provider status. I have completed in excess of 750 invisalign cases. I represent the UK and the European Clinical Advisory Board for Align Technlogy Inc., where together with collegues, we are at the forefront of developing the Invisalign technique.
My philosophy is to provide treatment that balances the science and art elements of leading-edge orthodontics, resulting in better dental function and good facial aesthetics. I use techniques that are both patient and practitioner friendly and I am a strong believer in harnessing technological advances to improve treatment, administration and communication.
In 2010 I was one of the first UK clinicians to offer the bespoke Insignia fixed appliance technique. In May 2013, I presented at the International Event for Experts in Orthodontics.
I am registered as a Specialist Orthodontist with the General Dental Council and am an active member of the Specialist Practitioner Group of the British Orthodontic Society and a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists.
Dr Paul Niland
Dental Implant Surgeon, BchD (Stell), DUIOFP (Lille)
Special interest in implantology and oral surgery
GDC number: 78631
I qualified in June 2000 at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, before relocating to the UK in 2001. I have always had a particular interest in IV sedation, oral surgery and implantology, and have gained vast experience in all of these fields over the years. I have advanced my knowledge and skills by obtaining a degree in implantology at the prestigious Lille University in France in 2009 and by completing numerous hours in postgraduate courses to stay abreast of the latest techniques.
I am a member of the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD), the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI), British Dental Association (BDA) and General Dental Council (GDC).
The hygiene team
Dental Hygienist CEB CERT
GDC number: 2449
I trained at the Institute of Dental Health and Training at RAF Halton and qualified in 1982, gaining CEB Cert in Dental Hygiene. I spent 22 years in the Royal Air Force as a dental hygienist working in general dental practice and oral surgery.
I joined Marlborough Dental Studio in October 2001. During my time at the practice I have attended courses in local anaesthetics, impression taking and temporary dressings, and tooth whitening to extend my scope of practice. I continue to attend meetings on a regular basis to ensure I am up to date in all things periodontal. I have been a member of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy for 32 years and attend the annual scientific meeting most years.
I am planning to attend a course on dental photography to improve my techniques.Read more
I am passionate about helping our patients achieve and maintain the best oral health possible and I try and ensure that I put my patients at ease so that they enjoy their experience in my care. I enjoy working with our great team who are always professional, conscientious and hard working. I always recommend Marlborough Dental Studio to my friends and family because of these high standards of care.
Eight years ago I under went 24 months of orthodontic treatment using the Damon system. It was a surprise for my family for a person of my age to have train tracks! The orthodontic treatment has helped with my confidence but more importantly I now have far fewer headaches. I have also had two implants placed and experienced the Cerec 3D system. All these experiences have enabled me to appreciate patients’ concerns about new dental treatments.
I settled in Wiltshire 23 years ago where I live with my partner and our cocker spaniel. I enjoy many sporting activities, particularly running and golf, and I have completed the Bath and Stratford upon Avon half marathons to raise money for Cancer Research UK, The Stroke Association and Ataxia UK.
I currently hold a single figure handicap in golf and have represented Wiltshire at county level. I also enjoy walking and spend many happy days on the Southwest coastal path and many other great areas of the British Isles.
Kate Sheather EDH Dip DH
GDC number: 4842
I qualified as a hygienist from The Eastman in 1995, where I was awarded the Dentsply clinical prize in my year.
I have been working at Marlborough Dental Studio for eight years, initially just one morning a week along with days at other practices but now Marlborough Dental Studio is the only practice in which I work.
There are many things I like about working at Marlborough Dental Studio. Stephen is a kind and supportive principal who has provided a lovely environment to work in. As a team we provide excellent, modern general and specialist dentistry of the highest quality, but I think what is genuinely great about the practice is that it has such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.Read more
Staff turnover is very low, so we really get to know and care about our patients. That makes it a very nice place to work and a lovely place to be a patient. I never hesitate to recommend the practice.
Working at Marlborough Dental Studio has allowed me to further my training and along with Bridget we carry out the majority of the tooth whitening in the practice. Tooth whitening is a relatively inexpensive and simple way to make a real difference to someone’s appearance and confidence and it gives me real pleasure to be able to do this for our patients.
We all participate in ongoing training, some of which is mandatory as registrants of the General Dental Council but at Marlborough Dental Studio we are particularly good at going on courses! For example, this year I have participated in four times the amount of Continued Professional Development required by the GDC and I think you will find this is the same with all our clinical team. I have a particular interest in infection control and through further training have gained a good knowledge of the very best practice where infection control is concerned.
Out of work, I love my dogs and most holidays are spent walking the coast paths and countryside of England. The exception to this is skiing, which I absolutely love. Unfortunately my enthusiasm greatly outweighs my talent but I stick with it and try to ski every year if I can.
I volunteer for a Newbury-based charity for vulnerable and homeless people and run entirely by volunteers. Loose Ends provides hot meals, a food bank, clothes and support for vulnerable adults. I am a volunteer, a supervisor and a committee member. It takes up quite a lot of my spare time and I am very glad to be involved with such of a remarkable group of people, both volunteers and clients.
GDC number: 160322
I am the practice manager at Marlborough Dental Studio and I have been with the practice for 13 years.
I qualified as a dental nurse in May 2003 and part of being a dental nurse is ensuring we have regular training and refresher courses. One of my personal favourites is cross infection control. It is always so interesting to see how things are ever changing and to implement new procedures to the practice to ensure our patients are being treated in a healthy, clean and safe environment.
I took on the role as practice manager in April 2013 and very much enjoy being front of house, welcoming patients to the practice and keeping everything running efficiently with the help of an amazing team. I have currently been on a Practice Managers’ Forum where it was great to be with other practice managers learning and sharing ideas.
I love working at Marlborough Dental Studio as it is like being at work with your extended family. We all work hard as a team and take any challenges on together. I admire how hard the dentists and hygienists work and how they still find time for practical jokes on staff along the way. They all have an amazing sense of humour.
The most rewarding part of my job is ensuring patients leave happy having achieved everything they want with their smile. I am currently considering having Invisalign invisible braces with our specialist Graham Gardner to achieve my perfect smile.
When I am not working I dedicate my time to home life and love nothing more than spending time with my husband Kevin and daughter Aoife. I am a keen shopper and always try to fit in an hour or two of a weekend - it’s just a shame Kevin and Aoife do not share my passion although I am still trying to convert them to the love of it!
As a family we support JDRF (Supporting Type 1 Diabetes) and Diabetes UK, a charity that is extremely close to our hearts because Aoife was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in May 2013 aged just seven. She is amazing and can teach me a thing or two about courage.
The Dental Nurses
Orthodontic Treatment Co-ordinator and Dental Nurse
GDC number: 184849
I qualified as a dental nurse in 2009 and since joining the practice in 2007 I have been given many opportunities to further my knowledge. In 2010 I started assisting our in-house oral surgeon. Assisting with sinus lift and implant procedures has helped me perfect my nursing skills and learn many new ones. I love being able to follow the patients’ treatment from start to finish and see how confident they become when the treatment is complete.Read more
Since having my own teeth straightened at the practice I have a real passion for the many orthodontic procedures that are available to our patients. This year I became an Invisalign treatment co-ordinator. Promoting Invisalign in our practice is so exciting.
If I could go back four years and have the clear aligners I would! Patients are able to feel confident while wearing a brace, which you can’t even see and I love that you can see the end result before the treatment has even begun with their special imaging technology.
I always love a challenge and this year I had further training in taking impressions and radiographs. I passed both exams and am looking forward to using these skills in my new role as treatment co-ordinator. My next challenge is to look further into oral health education.
Working at Marlborough Dental Studio is not just a job it’s a part of my life. It’s like having an extended family. We all work really well as a team. We were also able to work as a team and raise money for Cancer Research when we did the Race For Life together.
Next year I hope to do the same and also raise awareness for children with Type 1 Diabetes. It is a charity close to my heart as my niece has been affected by the consequences of the condition.
In my spare time I love socialising and shopping like most women in the world! I also enjoy keeping fit and working in a practice with three flights of stairs certainly does the trick. I love to travel and I have been fortunate enough to visit some amazing places. In the next couple of years I want to travel to Uganda or Zimbabwe with Dentaid to help less fortunate countries become aware of their oral health..
Senior Dental Nurse
GDC number 156880
I am senior dental nurse at the practice and I have been working very happily at Marlborough Dental Studio since 2004. I began dental nursing in 2001 and achieved my certificate in dental nursing in April 2003. I have been lucky enough to have been part of several roles within the practice, beginning as a dental nurse for Dr Byford and then progressing to head nurse. The arrival of my baby boy Benjamin in 2011 meant that when I returned to work as a part time employee it was in the practice’s best interest to allow another member of our team to carry out this role of responsibility.Read more
Marlborough Dental Studio has enabled me to obtain additional qualifications in the dental field including radiography and taking dental impressions, which I absolutely love, as the more I can become involved, the more I enjoy my job. My newest venture is assisting our implantologist and co-ordinating our patients through the journey from start to finish.
Working at Marlborough Dental Studio is the most rewarding job I have had as we always keep up to date with new up and coming treatments, as well as inviting a wide range of specialists into our practice to give our patients the best possible care. Whilst working at the practice I have had the pleasure of experiencing some of the best treatments, from dental hygiene appointments, to having orthodontic treatment before my wedding in 2007, which gave me the most amazing smile for one of the most important days of my life.
I have great admiration for all the dentists, hygienists, specialists and team members of the practice, as I feel everyone has the highest standards and respect for each other and for our patients.
I would recommend any friend or family member to come and see our team as I feel we can offer a very friendly, professional service to people from all walks of life.
As a practice we are all keen charity fundraisers and we often donate dental equipment to Dentaid, a dental charity that takes equipment to developing countries. Also as a team we entered the Race For Life to raise money for Cancer Research. It was a great day with some excellent fundraising achieved. This charity is particularly important to me because I lost both of my parents to this tragic disease.
Outside of work my precious time is spent with my young son and husband, along with many other friends and family. These are the most important people in my life and I cherish every day with them. Another love of mine is travelling, so we always try to get as many weekends and trips away in a year as we possibly can, as my main statement in life is to treasure your memories as materialistic things come and go.

I’m a dental nurse at Marlborough Dental Studio. I have worked here since 2008 and have been qualified for three years. I have been lucky enough to work with the specialists and I am currently learning surgical and implant procedures to be able to work with the implantologist, which I am very excited about.
I find the human body fascinating and to be able to experience and work at that level is extremely fulfilling. I am always learning more about dentistry and the human body, every day is different and I love that about my job.Read more
One of my responsibilities within the practice is the running and maintenance of our Cerec 3D system which is the new amazing way of creating a crown, veneer or inlay within one appointment.
As a nurse I am very lucky with the team I work with. I have great respect for both Stephen and Ian as they always aim to push themselves further in the interest of the patient and progression of the practice - as well as having to cope working in a practice with 10 women! They are very professional in their work but know how to have a laugh and joke with the nurses, which makes for a lovely atmosphere.
Both hygienists are down to earth people and they both have a fantastic sense of humour, Bridget is so passionate about her work and Kate makes the best cakes ever - as well as being able to always make us laugh.
I had orthodontics at Marlborough Dental Studio and had the Damon system due to my bite. It wasn’t until after my orthodontic treatment was completed that I really noticed how much better my smile was. I’m still smiling now!
I have just recently brought my first property with my partner. It’s a renovation project but I’m very much into making things, so am looking forward to the challenge. I love rabbits and I have special breeds at home. I enjoy making occasion cards for people and have them for sale in the practice, so please take a browse.

I grew up with models of teeth around me and the smell of wax and alginate, as my father and brother are both dental technicians. I started my dental career as a receptionist for a dental practice and was given the opportunity to train as a nurse. I qualified as a registered dental nurse in 2009 after completing my training at Salisbury District Hospital and I joined the team at Marlborough Dental Studio in October 2010.Read more
I really enjoy seeing our patients’ reaction when they first see the results of our dentistry in the mirror. It can be very rewarding knowing that I have played a part in the procedure.
The rapport between the team at Marlborough Dental Studio is fun yet professional and it does feel like we are one big family rather than colleagues.
My personal experiences of treatment at Marlborough Dental Studio are Enlighten Whitening and I have also had Cerec crowns. I’d had a chipped upper front tooth since childhood and Ian Byford repaired it with composite filling - it has changed my smile. Friends, patients and family all comment on my teeth.
I attend many courses throughout the year to continue my professional development. These are informative and it keeps me up to date with procedures.
I live in a lovely cottage with my husband Stephen and cat Jess. In my spare time I enjoy gardening, entertaining and cooking. I particularly enjoy cooking the Sunday roast whilst listening to Elaine Page on Radio 2 playing songs from the shows!
Two years ago I took up running and have since completed two half marathons raising money for NICU (newborn intensive care unit) at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. This is a charity dear to my heart as my son was premature. I am planning on running another half marathon next year. Last year I completed a parachute jump from 10,000 feet but this is an experience that I will not be repeating!
I joined the lovely team at Marlborough Dental Studio in 2013 as a steri-nurse. I used to work as a dental nurse for a hygienist for about 10 years so I'm very happy to be working back at a dental practice again.
I hope to gain my dental nurse qualification one day. I’m very lucky to be working in such a great practice with lovely people. Everyone has been very friendly and helped me to do my job. I admire them all for the great work they do and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone better. I have a grown up son and I enjoy walking, swimming and spending time with family and friends.
I am a patient co-ordinator and have been with the practice since1997, some could say I’m part of the furniture, but hopefully ageing well!
I love working at Marlborough Dental Studio as I get to greet patients at the front desk and help them feel at ease. The dentist is not everyone’s favourite place to visit but I feel a good smile and a little laughter helps patients feel more comfortable and relaxed.Read more
I feel very fortunate over the past 16 years to have worked with such professional and dedicated members of staff and that everyone who works at Marlborough Dental Studio are also my good friends. During my time at Marlborough Dental Studio I have gained a good knowledge and understanding of all dental treatment from white composite fillings to implants and feel confident that I will always learn something new as technology continues to improve all the time making dentistry almost pain free.
I work part time so enjoy spending time with my husband Neil and young son Max and of course our three cats Whiskers, Owen and Hector who are all girls!
I am a keen runner and I would like to run a half marathon to help raise money for my local community in which I have lived for over 30 years. We are trying to raise money to rebuild our very old Purton Scout and Cub hut, which my son Max attends, and I feel very passionate about continuing a social community spirit for young children.
I hope to continue working at Marlborough Dental Studio for another 16 years, unless of course I win the lottery!
I joined Marlborough Dental Studio in 2006 and work on reception and in administration where I enjoy welcoming new and existing patients to our practice. Our goal is not to keep our patients waiting as our aim is to keep them as relaxed as possible and less apprehensive about their visit. With the much improved technology and continued training the whole team, we are confident our patients receive the best care and we will happily go that extra mile, even personally delivering to our patients’ door. We take our training seriously and are all competent in CPR and defibrillator use. We have our own defibrillator in the practice.
I’m 56, married to Tony, a mother to two beautiful daughters Kirstie and Olivia and a first time grandmother to a beautiful granddaughter Evelyn Rose. I also seem to have adopted a black and white spaniel Maizie, who is extremely loving and bouncy.
My youngest daughter became interested in triathlons competing for Wiltshire at Carmarthen Castle winning the team event and meeting elite Ironman contestants including the Top British competitor. Tony and I taxied her for miles to compete and support her. I felt I wanted to do more for her so I trained and became a triathlete coach.
I love reading and walking, gardening, cooking and entertaining, and travelling abroad, recently visiting the beaches and war graves in France which I found very humbling. We must keep the poppy and Remembrance alive.
I, along with the girls at Marlborough Dental Studio, ran the Race For Life in Marlborough raising a good total.
We support Cancer Research and now with the news of Emma’s daughter Aoife’s diabetes, we also signed up to support a child’s hospice. We all attend Marlborough Dental Studio for our routine examinations and hygiene inspections and both my girls have had orthodontic treatment here.
The team at Marlborough Dental Studio is supportive, warm and friendly and we have happy moments during our working day and some cheeky patients that make us giggle too. I enjoy working with Emma and Barbara on reception.
Stephen and Ian are so generous at Christmas time treating us to meals out and shows in London. We have seen some brilliant shows and that’s so kind. We are treated during the year too and this is good for morale. Throughout the practice we stay professional and caring and support each other pulling together when members are on holiday or unwell. I would recommend Marlborough Dental Studio to friends and family as we take pride in and care about our patients.
